Is it for you?

Certified (CIWFM) grade enables you to demonstrate your alignment with the standard setter within the industry, establishing credibility in your career as you seek employment opportunities or present credentials to potential clients. There are three routes you can take to join at Certified (CIWFM) grade:

Route A - you must have the following:

  • At least three years' workplace and / or facilities experience
  • At least two years' managerial experience
  • An IWFM Diploma at Level 6 or above

Route B - you must have the following:

  • At least three years' workplace and / or facilities experience
  • At least two years' managerial experience
  • A facilities management or related qualification at Level 6 or above (which is comparable in size to a Diploma) OR Chartered status of a relevant professional body

The Experiential Route - you must have the following:

  • Hold a senior or strategic role in workplace or facilities management.
  • Be responsible for planning and implementing significant strategic or operational changes.
  • Lead complex tasks and oversee the work of others, exercising broad autonomy and judgement.
  • Be able to provide examples from your work experience that demonstrates competency across the IWFM Professional Standards

This experiential route is ideal for professionals ready to be recognised for their expertise who have not had the opportunity to study for academic qualifications. 

Membership fees:
  • Route B assessment (a one off payment when you join or upgrade to this level via Route B): £99
  • Experiential Route to CIWFM assessment (a one off payment when you join or upgrade to this level via the Experiential Route to CIWFM): £592
  • Certified member subscription: £307

Knowledge and competencies

Applicants must demonstrate their knowledge, skills and experience of the following competencies within your supporting documentation.

The Business Organisation: How to develop and implement:

  • FM Strategy and articulate its importance on the FM function and the wider organisation
  • business plans and measure their performance

Risk Management: The principles and application of risk management, analysis and reduction and how this is integral to business continuity and strategy.

Quality Management: Theories and principles of quality management, and implement quality systems, strategies and assurance control

Customer Service: The services environment and are; leaders in developing customer service led cultures, as well as experienced in customer relationship management.

Financial Management: Interpreting financial information to support operational activities and decisions and are experienced in preparing and managing budgets; life costing and financial monitoring.

Applicants must also demonstrate their knowledge, skills and experience in a range of the following areas or in-depth knowledge in one or more:

  • Management Principles
  • Human Recourse Management
  • Property and Building Services Maintenance
  • Support Services Operations
  • Sustainability and Environmental Issues
  • Procurement, Contracts and Contract Management
  • Legislation Codes, Directive and Regulatory Issues

Supporting materials

To be assessed for Certified grade via Route B, with your application, you must supply a copy of your CV (if you need help with your CV please use our template as a guide), your most recent job description, an CIWFM declaration form and if applicable an original or certified copy of your qualification certificate
