Delivering value for armed forces veterans in 2024 and beyond

Approximately one year ago, IWFM was delighted to launch the Veterans in FM network after signing the Armed Forces Covenant. IWFM has endeavoured to support current and former servicepeople in the workplace and facilities management (WFM) sector, advocate for their interests and provide learning and development, ultimately creating new opportunities for a rich yet underutilised talent pool.

Over 2024, we’ve seen the network grow and develop in a variety of ways, connecting veterans and the WFM sector to build strong, lasting relationships. For instance, in September Veterans in FM committee members hosted a webinar outlining the different pathways into WFM for veterans, including insight into professional development and the range of WFM job roles available. Furthermore, IWFM reached out to veterans who’ve progressed in WFM to discover perspectives on topics such as successfully managing the transition to civilian life, applying transferrable skills and engaging in networking.

Mitie’s Head of Defence, Charlie Antelme, explained the worth of ‘working in and building disparate teams’; Veterans in FM Chair Louisa Clarke detailed the importance of qualifications to her career progression; Sodexo’s Mark Baker described challenging perceptions of veterans’ capabilities; PestGone Environmental Ltd founder Mark Moseley set out the need for effective communication in military and civilian roles; while Mark Sutcliffe, CEO of Lorne Stewart Facilities Services, outlined his significant professional achievements gained through WFM.

While 2024 has been a positive year overall, IWFM will strive to deliver even more value for veterans in the new year. IWFM encourages service leavers, veterans and those interested in the network’s activities to find out more here or get in touch through LinkedIn. IWFM thanks everyone who has been involved in the network since it launched and look forward to working with you in 2025.
