In 2023, the Institute entered its fourth decade. IWFM embarked on a three-year strategic plan focused on growth and our strongest offering yet for members.

Remaining true to our core purpose - the belief that workplace and facilities management transforms organisations and enhances experience - and our mission, we set five strategic objectives to ensure our activity connected to our purpose and was focused on creating and sustaining growth.

In year one of our strategy, six priorities concentrated our minds and our Annual Report discusses the progress we made in a thrilling but testing year.

We launched new learning and development products targeted to members’ needs and opportunities. IWFM Mentoring launched in August was a huge success and was just part of continuing to bring value into IWFM members.

There are undeniable positives from 2023. Income was up in a number of key areas and the course was set for further growth in several core product and service areas. There was also continued improvement in member retention which was warmly encouraging.

Operating costs fell despite major strategic investment and the UK’s worst economic performance for fifteen years.

A major investment in 2023 was the essential replacement of our learning management system. It was our biggest and costliest project, but the new learning platform we introduced in the autumn, so important for future growth, is already making a difference.

In any context, striking the right balance between investment for growth and cost control is a fine one indeed. In a recessionary environment that challenge gets harder.

Crucial to this has been a purpose-driven strategy, disciplined prioritisation, focused leadership and prudent cost control. Key has also been the ongoing support of our community groups in engagement and delivery and the concentrated effort of the team.

We have much to do for the remainder of our strategy. Growth continues to be our north star.

With kindness,

Linda Hausmanis

Chief Executive
