National Careers Week is an ideal time to reflect on your career trajectory and commit to professional development in the workplace and facilities management (WFM) sector. Whether you’re new to WFM, midway through your career or an established leader, there is always room for growth and advancement.

In a world of change – from sustainability to technology to evolving ways of working - investing in your professional development is crucial to staying relevant and competitive in your field. This year, there are numerous opportunities to enhance your skills and knowledge. I recommend you:

  • Take courses: IWFM’s sector-recognised courses are designed so you can progress and stay up to date with best practices. I recommend WFM Essentials, a series of training guides, delivered through bitesize e-learning which helps you stay ahead of the curve.

  • Attend networking events: connect with fellow professionals, share experiences and learn from each other's successes and challenges.

  • Engage with voluntary opportunities: gain hands-on experience and broaden your skillset by volunteering for relevant projects or initiatives.

  • Consider mentoring: wherever you stand in your career, you can gain exclusive insight and improve your communication skills by connecting with more of the community.

  • Upskill and reskill with guidance: access IWFM’s Insight Hub to refresh your knowledge on many of the sector’s key trends, like compliance, procurement and soft services.

To learn more about the IWFM People Development SIG's 2025 plans and how we support professional development, we invite you to our virtual Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Thursday 20 March. This is an excellent opportunity to connect with likeminded professionals and gain insights into the latest developments in WFM career growth and leadership.

Visit the People Development SIG on LinkedIn to learn more about our activities day-to-day.
