Data is often described as ‘the new oil’ – the vital resource that powers the world economy. Descriptions such as these can seem cliched, but they also reflect reality: data does play a central role in modern life; we all use and rely on data in our jobs and daily lives, often without thinking about it.

However, when compared with some other sectors, the workplace and facilities management market is still relatively immature when it comes to understanding the value of data and implementing digital strategies for harnessing the power of data.

It’s not unusual for:

• investments in digital transformation to end in failure or fall short of expectations

• organisations to under-estimate the investment and the time required to create value from data

• organisations to fall into the trap of seeing technology as a ‘silver bullet’ that will solve all of their data problems.

Such issues can lead to frustration, conflict and a negative image for the industry.

The purpose of this guidance note is to provide workplace and FM professionals with a better understanding of the value data can bring to their work and the practical things they need to consider when trying to make better use of data.
