As a reflection on 27 October’s National Mentoring Day, IWFM’s Rising FMs Network set out to discover the perspectives of IWFM Mentoring’s mentors and mentees, the impact on their professional journey, advice for professionals considering taking part and much more. In this edition, we speak to Barbora Hallam Skalova, Managing Director at Elevate Consulting Services Ltd, to discover what it’s like to be a mentor and mentee, the career gains that can be made and making a positive personal impact on mentees.

Remember, IWFM Mentoring is always looking for new mentors and mentees to enhance our community – read on and find out why you should get involved.

How have mentoring schemes contributed to your continued development in your workplace and facilities management (WFM) career?

Throughout my 20-year career in WFM, both formal and informal mentoring has been instrumental in my development. Recognising that I couldn't achieve my goals alone, I was open to seeking guidance and advice from others. I think if anyone is considering mentoring, having the confidence to ask for help is vital. No-one knows everything - I learnt that the hard way!

Do you have any notable memories of being a mentee?

One particularly impactful mentor was a Regional Director who later became my line manager. Observing his leadership style and discussing key strategies with him was invaluable. His patience and willingness to listen to my concerns were crucial in my transition from Project Manager to General Manager.

Has mentoring others contributed to your own development on a personal and/or career level?

Absolutely, mentoring others has been incredibly rewarding and personally fulfilling. While sharing my experiences and knowledge, I've also gained new perspectives and insights. It's been a continuous learning process that has helped me grow both personally and professionally. It is interesting what you can still learn about yourself.

What would you consider to be the achievements from your mentoring?

I've had the privilege of mentoring several individuals, and I'm proud of their accomplishments. One mentee, who was working in a toxic environment, gained the confidence to make a career change. She is now thriving as an WFM manager in a workplace that suits her- and she is no longer afraid to be who she is. Another mentee successfully transitioned from a PA/admin role to a General Manager position at a prominent PFI hospital in London.
