Context:
Commercial real estate contributes around 40% of greenhouse gas emissions and reducing this in the coming years is essential both for companies to hit their own sustainability goals and, of course, for minimising environmental damage. With increased attention on managing climate change, achieving net zero emissions is becoming a top priority for many organisations.
As experts in managing buildings and workspaces, be that energy, waste, cleaning, fleet, landscaping or engineering, the facilities management (FM) industry can have a huge impact on helping businesses on their journey towards net zero. A facilities management organisation’s ability to influence building/organisation’s net carbon emissions is essential to mitigating climate change.
In the future, FM companies will need to take an important transitional role as net zero managers through a comprehensive and strategic approach towards making building operations net zero through adoption of sustainable facilities management including energy efficiency, renewable energy, waste reduction, sustainable materials management and digitalisation.
